On Thursday, 1/15/09, Perry Christensen, one of our team members, gave a brief presentation to the Fresno Madera Voluntary Organizations in Disaster (FMVOAD) group. His focus was disaster recovery and five things organizations can do today to begin the disaster recovery process. You can download the handout from the meeting and link to outher resources below.

There are thousands of websites that offer help with disaster recovery and business continuity planning. You can pay consultants to create a plan for your organization. There is software available to help with the planning and recovery processes. In addition to the links listed below you may want to search on the following terms:

Disaster recovery planning

Disaster recovery training

Disaster recovery articles

Click here to download the handout from the FMVOAD meeting.

eHow offers 7 steps to create a disaster recovery plan. It is a great start for understanding what is involved.

The department Homeland security has several resources including a publication called Every Business Should have a Plan and a website with additional materials.

Disaster recovery.org has information, case studies and offers free materials and a template.

Don’t forget to actually test the plans you put in place. Make sure the plan actually works by restoring data that you have safely copied off of your computer. Test that individuals understand the plan and are able to properly implement their responsibilities.
As always, TTS is ready to help you with your IT related questions. Just email us at info@thomas-tech.net.

This new announcement extends the original cutoff, January 31, 2009, for six months. The long lived operating system will be available from companies like HP and Dell as a downgrade from Windows Vista.

The reluctance by many companies to migrate to VISTA as a corporate solution is believed by many to behind this latest extension. If the Windows 7 launch remains on target, the new deadline would leave a gap of only 6 months and may encourage companies to completely bypass Vista.

According to the BBC, NASA has confirmed that laptops carried to the ISS in July were infected with a virus known as Gammima.AG.

NASA is working to identify the source of the infection but it is thought that the virus might have travelled via a flash or USB drive owned by an astronaut and taken into space.

Although the virus poses no threat to the systems on the ISS (It is designed to harvest logon information for online multipalyer role games) it is an excellent reminder of how easily viruses and maleware can find their way into your computer network.

Remember to keep you virus definitions up to date scan weekly and limit the ability for outside devices to interface with your network. TTS can assist you in eliminating virus problems on a single computer or your entire network.
